The Power of being Nice

November 19, 2006

I came across an article called The Power of Nice written by Robin Koval, in which it reminded me of how far nice can go at work versus using bullying or alpha male tactics to encourage people to work.

The following points made in the article are:

  • “Nice” and “Kind” are becoming operative philosophies by some companies are
  • Create an environment that supports a “nicer” mind set
  • Discussed the Nice Guys Bill of Right: speaking up, setting boundaries, taking risks, valuing your time, and being accountable to avoid people taking advantage of your good nature
  • Studies show niceness can increase productivity and reduce turn over

Yes, I have found that behavior follows behavior, in the same way that a smile follows a smile. Being pleasant to someone, even a stranger, will often draw out a similar or related response. And this can be particularly so in a corporate team.

This is a long way from relying on teambuilding consultants with their exercises and motivational stories! Because, simply attending a team retreat is not going to build a team that works together, even with the best teambuilding ideas in the world. Good teamwork depends on the personal ATTITUDE of each team member as they work with the others and commit to the objectives of the company. Day after day. Week by week. Right?

My hairstylist, who owns his salon, loves reading about ways to improve his business and told me about this book called Be Nice or Else! Same concept of what’s described above. I’m about to hop on half.com to purchase it. Book’s website: http://www.beniceorelse.com/
